Failed on check of accidental merge to main branch.

After some research, it seems the right thing to do is to configure this check to be marked SKIP in the gh action, and instead use gh branch protection to avoid direct merges to main. The check is still useful for local workflows using the pre-commit framework as an actual git pre-commit hook.
