Bug Report: GoPro Quik fails to connect HERO13 Black to WiFi (STA mode) for Live Streaming, while Labs QR code works
Bug Description
GoPro Quik app fails to connect HERO13 Black to any WiFi network
(STA mode) when setting up Live Streaming. The app shows error
"Unable to connect camera to this network". However, using GoPro
Labs QR code (*JOIN="SSID:password"!W) successfully connects
the camera to the exact same network with the same password.
After connecting via Labs QR code, Quik can start and maintain
a stable RTMP live stream without any issues.
Environment
- Camera: GoPro HERO13 Black
- Firmware: v2.10.70 (Labs)
- Phone: iPhone, iOS (latest)
- App: GoPro Quik (latest version from App Store)
- WiFi: Multiple networks tested (home router 2.4GHz/5GHz,
iPhone hotspot)
Steps to Reproduce
Failing scenario (Quik):
- Open GoPro Quik, connect to HERO13 Black
- Go to Live Stream → RTMP
- Select WiFi network (e.g., home router 2.4 GHz, WPA2,
simple ASCII SSID and password)
- Enter correct password
- Tap "Start"
- Result: Error "Unable to connect camera to this network"
- Stream starts briefly (3 seconds) then drops
- Camera shows crossed-out WiFi icon
Working scenario (Labs QR + Quik):
- Generate Labs QR code:
*JOIN="SSID:password"!W
- Show QR code to camera, confirm with 3 shutter presses
- Camera shows "joining network [SSID]" then
"Connected to [SSID]" — WiFi connects successfully
- Open GoPro Quik, set up Live Stream → RTMP
- Select the same WiFi network
- Start stream
- Result: Stream works stably (tested 7+ minutes,
H264 + MPEG-4 Audio confirmed via MediaMTX RTMP server)
Key Observations
- WiFi STA mode works fine via Labs QR code —
the WiFi module is functional
- Quik's WiFi provisioning specifically fails —
it cannot connect the camera to any external WiFi network
- AP mode works fine (file transfer via Quik uses
camera's own WiFi network)
- The camera was previously repaired (WiFi module replaced)
but issue persists
- Problem occurs on multiple networks (home router 2.4GHz,
5GHz, iPhone hotspot)
- The workaround (Labs QR → Quik stream) is stable and
reliable
Workaround
- Install GoPro Labs firmware (v2.10.70 for HERO13 Black)
- Generate QR code with WiFi credentials:
*JOIN="YOUR_SSID:YOUR_PASSWORD"!W
- Show QR to camera, confirm with 3 shutter presses
- Wait for "Connected to [SSID]"
- Open Quik and start Live Stream as usual
Expected Behavior
Quik should be able to connect HERO13 Black to WiFi networks
for Live Streaming without requiring Labs QR code workaround.
Additional Notes
- Tested with both official firmware v02.10 and
Labs firmware v2.10.70 — Quik WiFi provisioning
fails on both
- Labs QR code also attempted to start stream directly
using !GU and !MRTMP= commands, but these commands
fail because the camera reboots when entering streaming
mode and loses temporary RTMP URL settings
- The permanent
*MRTMP="rtmp://..." setting is also not
picked up by !G after reboot — this may be a separate
Labs limitation
