## Drawing & Painting

This artwork uses cameras to detect how people move. The program draws an outline around that human motion and connects it with other people’s outlines as a series of dots. These dots connect and dance with other people’s dots, creating a constantly changing picture.
32+
33+
<iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/344447606?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479" width="1920" height="1013" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media" title="Precarious, 2018"></iframe>
34+
35+
#### Let's Discuss
36+
37+
- How does the camera help the computer to “see” people move?
38+
- What makes this artwork different from a regular painting?
39+
40+
### [_Possible, Plausible, Potential_](https://www.creativeapplications.net/project/possible-plausible-potential-drawings-of-architecture-generated-by-code/) (2015)

This artist wrote code that lets the computer make some creative choices on its own. He told the computer the basic rules (like “stay inside these lines”), but let it decide where to draw each line, making each piece more of a “conversation” between the artist and the computer.
48+
49+
> Nóbrega understands his process as one of defining the boundaries in which experiments will take place. The outcomes of these experiments are sometimes unpredictable, which will most likely add up to the process in a feedback loop. The role of the artist ends up being to interpret the results and based on them to redefine the boundaries of the program.
50+
>
51+
> \- Filip Visnjic, Creative Applications
52+
53+
In other words, the artist sets the rules. The computer follows them, but its choices aren’t always predictable. That creates surprises the artist can respond to.
54+
55+
<iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/143076578?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479" width="1920" height="1080" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media" title="Superficie – Possible, plausible, potential"></iframe>
56+
57+
#### Let's Discuss
58+
59+
- What parts of the art were controlled by the artist? What parts were random?
60+
- In what way is the computer acting like a collaborator in the creative process?
61+
62+
**Tip:** [p5.plotSvg](https://github.com/golanlevin/p5.plotSvg) is a tool that supports p5.js artists to download their sketches as SVG files, making it possible to connect p5.js with pen plotters.

## Printmaking

### [*Decode Kolams*](https://aarati.online/rituals-of-recursion) (2025)

26+
Close-up view of *Decode Kolams*, screen-printed pattern generated in p5.js.
27+
28+
Kolams are beautiful patterns that women in South India have drawn for hundreds of years.
29+
30+
> Kolams are traditionally made by women and created before sunrise. They comprise mathematically complex patterns that feature continuous intertwined lines.
31+
>
32+
> \- Aarati Akkapeddi
33+
34+
In this project, the artist used code to turn text into binary (1s and 0s), then turned that into a design on a grid. The result honors an old tradition using a new tool and helps us consider how cultural heritage can be preserved or extended by technology.
35+
36+

41+
42+
#### Let's Discuss
43+
- How is text turned into a pattern?
44+
- How can code help keep traditions like Kolams alive?
45+
- Can you think of other traditional patterns that could be represented by code?
46+
47+
**Tip:** You are invited to encode text into a kolam pattern using Akkapeddi's software, [kolam.codes](https://kolam.codes/).

### [*Glance Back*](https://glanceback.info/) (2021)
23+
Maya Man
24+
25+
This project asks: What do you look like when you’re focused on your computer? This artist made a program that randomly takes a photo of you while you’re browsing the internet. It also asks what you’re thinking about. Over time, you build a collection of these surprise photos and thoughts.
26+
27+
> With this Chrome extension, once a day at random, when you open a new tab, Glance Back will quickly snap a photo of you and inquire: “What are you thinking about?”. Once you type your answer and press enter, the photo and thought will be collectively saved to your history of glances, cumulatively creating an archive of moments you share with your screen.

#### Let's Discuss
40+
- What does this project show about the way we use computers?
41+
- How does the computer act like a camera and a journal?
42+
- How does this use of code shape our understanding of who is in control in digital spaces?
43+

Have you ever seen those fancy lace decorations someone might put under their teacup during tea time? Those are called doilies. This artist used code to design doily patterns, but instead of flowers, her patterns are based on the shapes of viruses! She then used special machines to embroider these organic-looking doilies.

34+
- How does using code to generate visual patterns change the meaning of an art form or craft conventionally designed by hand?
35+
- How can code help us see everyday things in new ways?
