Overview

PowerLASCOPF.jl is a Julia package for Look-Ahead Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (LASCOPF) built on NREL/Sienna's infrastructure:

Running PowerLASCOPF Example Cases

This guide explains how to run any case from the example_cases/ folder using run_reader_generic.jl — the single entry-point runner that supersedes all case-specific scripts (run_5bus_lascopf.jl, run_14bus_lascopf.jl, …).

Short names (5bus, 14bus, …) and full folder names (IEEE_14_bus) are both accepted.

Non-IEEE Cases — example_cases/<CaseName>/

All folders at the top level of example_cases/ that contain a LASCOPF_settings.yml file are discovered automatically.

PSS/E RAW and MATPOWER cases require PowerSystems.jl to be fully loaded (see File architecture). Until data_reader.jl is active, they fall back to the DataFrame-stub simulation.


3. Running modes

3a. Interactive mode (recommended for first use)

julia run_reader_generic.jl

The runner will:

  1. Display all discovered cases with their format type.
  2. Prompt you to select a case by number or name.
  3. Ask for optional parameters (iterations, tolerance, verbose).
  4. Run the simulation and offer to run another case.

3b. Command-line mode

julia run_reader_generic.jl case=<name> [options]

Arguments without = are treated as the case name:

5. LASCOPF_settings.yml — per-case ADMM configuration

Every non-IEEE case folder (and optionally IEEE folders) can contain a LASCOPF_settings.yml that controls solver behaviour. If the file is absent, built-in defaults are used.

These settings are loaded automatically by load_case_data() and passed through to execute_simulation() via the config dictionary.


6. How format detection works

detect_file_format() in data_reader_generic.jl inspects the case folder and returns one of five symbols:

Detection is automatic — you do not specify a format for non-CSV cases.


7. Adding a new case

Option A — Sahar CSV format (IEEE-style)

  1. Create example_cases/IEEE_Test_Cases/IEEE_<N>_bus/
  2. Add the required CSV files (see IEEE_Test_Cases/ADDING_NEW_CASES.md):
    • Nodes<N>_sahar.csv
    • ThermalGenerators<N>_sahar.csv
    • Trans<N>_sahar.csv
    • Loads<N>_sahar.csv
  3. Optionally add RenewableGenerators<N>_sahar.csv, HydroGenerators<N>_sahar.csv, Storage<N>_sahar.csv
  4. Run: julia run_reader_generic.jl case=<N>bus

Option B — PSS/E RAW or MATPOWER format

  1. Create example_cases/<CaseName>/
  2. Place your .RAW or .m file in that folder.
  3. Add LASCOPF_settings.yml (copy from an existing case and adjust).
  4. Run: julia run_reader_generic.jl case=<CaseName>

Requires PowerSystems.jl and PowerLASCOPF loaded — see File architecture.

Option C — RTS-GMLC CSV format

  1. Create example_cases/<CaseName>/
  2. Add bus.csv, gen.csv, branch.csv in RTS-GMLC column format. Optionally add storage.csv and reserves.csv.
  3. Add LASCOPF_settings.yml.
  4. Run: julia run_reader_generic.jl case=<CaseName>

Registering non-numeric names (optional)

If your case name contains no digits (e.g., MyGrid), add it to the CASE_NAME_REGISTRY constant in data_reader_generic.jl:

data_reader.jl requires both PowerSystems and PowerLASCOPF to be loaded. While PowerLASCOPF is still under development (src/ not yet a registered package), the data_reader.jl include in run_reader.jl is inside a try/catch.

To enable full system construction (PSS/E RAW, MATPOWER, RTS-GMLC, sahar):

  1. Uncomment the PowerLASCOPF source block in run_reader.jl:

  2. Re-run — data_reader.jl will load automatically and Phase 2.5 in run_case() will build the real PowerLASCOPFSystem.

Until then, run_case() completes the data-loading phase normally and falls back to the DataFrame-based economic dispatch stub for the simulation phase.


9. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix

PowerLASCOPF Data Reader System

📋 Overview

This system replaces hardcoded data arrays with a file-based data reading architecture. Instead of modifying Julia code to change test cases, you can now:

  1. ✅ Store data in CSV or JSON files
  2. ✅ Use one generic runner for any case
  3. ✅ Add new test cases by adding data files (no code changes)

🎯 Problem Solved

Before (Old Approach):

  • ❌ Data mixed with code (hard to maintain)
  • ❌ Separate file needed for each test case

  • ❌ No standard format for sharing data

Purpose: Define electrical buses (connection points)

Field Explanations:

  • BusNumber: Unique identifier (integer)
  • BusName: Human-readable label (string)
  • BusType: "REF" (slack bus), "PV" (generator bus), "PQ" (load bus)
  • Angle: Initial voltage angle in radians (usually 0.0)
  • Voltage: Initial voltage magnitude in per-unit (usually 1.0)
  • VoltageMin/Max: Operating voltage limits (e.g., 0.95-1.05 pu)
  • BaseVoltage: Nominal voltage in kV (e.g., 230.0)

2. Transmission Lines (Branches)

Purpose: Define transmission lines connecting buses

Field Explanations:

  • LineType: "AC" (normal transmission) or "HVDC" (high-voltage DC)
  • FromNode/ToNode: Bus numbers this line connects
  • Resistance (R): Line resistance in per-unit
  • Reactance (X): Line reactance in per-unit
  • Susceptance (B): Shunt susceptance in per-unit
  • RateLimit: Maximum power flow (thermal limit) in per-unit or MW
  • AngleLimitMin/Max: Voltage angle difference limits (radians)

For HVDC lines, additional fields:

  • ActivePowerMin/Max: Active power transfer limits
  • ReactivePowerFromMin/Max: Reactive power at sending end
  • ReactivePowerToMin/Max: Reactive power at receiving end
  • LossL0, LossL1: Loss model coefficients (Loss = L0 + L1*Power)

3. Thermal Generators

Purpose: Define coal, gas, nuclear power plants

  • PrimeMover: "ST" (steam turbine), "GT" (gas turbine), "CC" (combined cycle)
  • Fuel: "COAL", "NATURAL_GAS", "NUCLEAR", "OIL"
  • RampUp/Down: Maximum power change per hour (MW/h)
  • TimeUp/Down: Minimum up/down time (hours) - can't turn off immediately
  • CostC0, C1, C2: Cost curve coefficients (Cost = C0 + C1P + C2P²)

  • VOMCost: Variable O&M cost ($/MWh)

4. Renewable Generators

Purpose: Define solar PV and wind turbines

Field Explanations:

  • PrimeMover: "PVe" (solar photovoltaic), "WT" (wind turbine)
  • PowerFactor: Ratio of real to apparent power (0.95 typical)
  • VariableCost: Usually 0.0 (no fuel cost) or small O&M

5. Hydro Generators

Purpose: Define hydroelectric dams and pumped storage

Problem: Optimize generator dispatch + line flows subject to:

  • Generator limits (min/max power, ramp rates, costs)
  • Line limits (thermal capacity, voltage angles)
  • Power balance (generation = load + losses)
  • N-1 security (system survives any single line outage)

Challenge: Too large to solve as one problem (combinatorial explosion with contingencies)

Solution: Alternate Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM)

PowerLASCOPF.jl Execution Flow Restructuring - Implementation Summary

Successfully restructured the PowerLASCOPF.jl simulation execution flow so users can run simulations for ANY case from a single entry point: examples/run_reader_generic.jl.

    • Takes: case_name, system, system_data, config
    • Returns: results dictionary with status, iterations, solve_time, etc.

  • Added: Include statement for run_reader.jl (line 84)
  • Modified: PHASE 4 (lines 400-567) to call execute_simulation()

    • Extracts results and updates results structure
    • Falls back to simple economic dispatch if simulation fails
