How To Obtain And Install
Obtain 007: Quantum of Solace from MyAbandonware.
This is currently the recommended source because it hosts the English/French build that works with Project: Consolation and also hosts the 1.1 patch you need to install.
When Games for Windows - LIVE launched, many of the early games that used the platform relied on a legacy activation system. Those older titles can be useful reference points when researching compatibility, so the PCGamingWiki list of GFWL-era games is a good preservation reference.
Only the English/French 1.1 release is supported right now.
Legacy activation is the older GFWL key system used by some of the first games on the platform. Those keys can often be redeemed multiple times, and in some cases can also work across other games that still accept the Legacy method.
Some legacy titles are still listed digitally, but the pool is small and they tend to disappear quickly. They are also commonly sold through key marketplaces and second-hand listings.
The commonly referenced GFWL Legacy titles are:
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Batman: Arkham City
- BioShock 2
- Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition
- Dead Rising 2
- Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
- DiRT 3
- Resident Evil 5
- Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
If you are checking other GFWL-era titles, the PCGamingWiki GFWL list is the best preservation reference for whether a game uses the same legacy activation style.
Unsupported setups currently include:
- repacks
- other regional releases
- unpatched
1.0 - other game versions
Games for Windows - LIVE keys are also often given away in our Discord:
Work is also being done to remove the long-term need for keys entirely, but that is not ready yet.
007: Quantum of Solace on PC has effectively been unavailable through normal first-hand digital storefronts for a long time.
That means people usually end up getting the game through second-hand copies, key resellers, or abandonware archives rather than through an official current storefront.
Availability and legality can vary by region, so use your own judgment and follow local rules.
If you are using a preserved copy, check that the install directory is clean and does not already contain unexpected modified runtime files from another package. For online play, Project: Consolation expects the normal GFWL multiplayer path rather than a pre-modded or pre-patched runtime.
It should be noted that some abandonware releases may already include an xlive.dll in the game folder. Delete it before playing online, since that file is almost always part of a crack or offline-only workaround. Project: Consolation currently uses the original GFWL multiplayer path, so a bundled xlive.dll can break or bypass the expected online flow.
You should install Games for Windows - LIVE separately using an up-to-date package.
The recommended source is:
Keep in mind that newer Games for Windows - LIVE packages may behave differently over time depending on compatibility changes.
Install the game normally.
The recommended install path is the default path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Quantum of Solace(TM)\
Then install the official 1.1 patch.
Patch 1.1 may not install correctly if the game is not installed in the default C:\ location. To avoid path issues, the recommended setup is the default install path plus the official 1.1 patch.
If you are using a nightly build or a release build:
- extract or copy the build into the game root
- overwrite everything when prompted
- launch using
Launch Consolation.lnk
The included shortcut already uses the required -multiplayer launch argument.
Example target behind the shortcut:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Quantum of Solace(TM)\JB_Launcher_s.exe" -multiplayer
Nightly builds should ship with Launch Consolation.lnk for this.
If your game is installed in the default directory, you should be able to use the included shortcut as-is.
If your game is not installed in the default directory, edit the shortcut target so it points at your real install path.
Advanced users can still make a non-default install work by manually copying the patch 1.1 files into the game root and then editing Launch Consolation.lnk so it points at the correct JB_Launcher_s.exe path.
